Mission

Holy Spirit Retirement Home, under the guidance and with the assistance of that same Holy Spirit, supports the beliefs and goals of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux City to reach out in assistance to the elderly, the poor and the disadvantaged.

We earnestly strive and wholly dedicate all of our energy and available resources towards providing a living environment that provides spiritual, physical and emotional comfort, and environment that offers personal independence whenever possible and always insures utmost personal dignity and respect to those we serve.

History

The history of Holy Spirit Retirement Home dates back to September, 1968 when ground was broken on the first part of the nursing home facility located at West 25th Street in Sioux City. Thirteen months later in October, 1969, Holy Spirit welcomes residents into its new facility.  The cost of the original building was $604,000.

Holy Spirit Retirement Home was originally supported by the local Holy Spirit Community and the Diocese of Sioux City.  The Diocese of Sioux City then assumed ownership in 1984.

In 1988, Holy Spirit celebrated the growth of its facility by adding 24 independent living apartments. Designed with maintenance-free living in mind, the apartments offer residents a neighborhood feel set within the Holy Spirit community. The beautiful onsite chapel was also added in 1988, offering daily Mass to all Holy Spirit residents.

To further enhance senior living options in Siouxland, Holy Spirit partners with the nearby Evergreen Terrace Apartment Complex, providing income-based housing for seniors.

In 1998 and 1999, Holy Spirit expands once more, adding 34 assisted living apartments. Eleven of the apartments are dedicated memory care units, providing specialized care for those living with dementia-related illnesses.

Realizing a need for additional private rooms, Holy Spirit embarked on a $5 million expansion campaign in 2012. The expansion added 30 new private skilled nursing rooms in addition to a new therapy center, recreational area, beauty salon and outdoor entertainment space. The new addition opened in the fall of 2013. Phase two of the project to renovate rooms in the original building began soon after. Completed in late 2014, the second phase offered additional private resident rooms, redesigned dining room and family lounges.

Today, we have one full-time resident Chaplin – Father Francis Makwinja along with three Holy Spirit Sisters that serve us in various full-time positions (CNA, CMA, and Office Assistant).  They live on the Holy Spirit property in a private home that provide a level of unmatched care relative to the other area nursing homes.  We are very fortunate to have them as part of our team.  Ask any resident or team member, and they will tell you that they make Holy Spirit “the special spiritual place that it is.”
